BMW is a man's car and other 1967 import ads

Why is BMW a man's car? Apparently because men enjoy hanging out at the beach alone. Advertising was different then. One sentence in bold followed by a picture and paragraphs of text are rarely used today, but in 1967 they were the norm.

Car and Driver's April 1967 issue has full page ads from nearly every import manufacture using variations on the same theme. Hit the jump to see the pitch from BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, VW, Saab, Volvo, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, MG, Triumph, Rootes/Chrysler, Rover, and Ford.


Personally, the Saab and Porsche ads are the best visually and I like the copy of the Mercedes-Benz ad more than the others. Taking up the rear are the MG, Rover and Volvo ads.



While I don't like to criticize anything about the Volvo P1800 the Ferrari comparison seems ridiculously weak and the ad seems to agree. The P1800 is great car in its own right and shouldn't be sold as half a Ferrari.





















Choosing a favorite car amongst the models advertised is difficult. The BMW, Citroen, and Renault are all very attractive. If I could buy any of these cars today for the 1967 MSRP, I'd take the Rover even though I don't know what a Sam Browne belt is. Despite the awful ad, I think the Rover is the least likely to be found for sale today in running condition.

  2. Nice blog! I love old car ads. Sometimes seems worth buying up all the old Time, Life, NatGeo mags in the used bookstores just to check out the ads.
