Before They Were Beaters: Mercury Topaz AWD

When 120 ft.lbs of torque is too much for one axle you need All Wheel Drive. If your Tempo or Topaz is properly equipped, you've got it. Although entirely mediocre, the Tempo AWD and diesel variants are almost interesting enough to care about.

The comparison between the Subaru GL on the backside of the brochure is one I've taken part in. My grandfather owned an AWD Tempo and his third wife drove a 4WD GL. Although Her Subbie breathed through a Hitachi two barrel carb and didn't have full time AWD like the brochure describes. After he passed away I drove the Subaru for a year and a half and even though it was by far the worst car I've ever owned, I'd still take it over a Tempo.
